Justice Samarendra Pratap Singh

Justice Samarendra Pratap Singh was born on 1 August 1955 into the Kulharia family of Bhojpur district. His father, the late Justice K.B.N. Singh, served as Chief Justice of the Patna High Court and Madras High Court and twice held the office of Acting Governor of Bihar during 1978–1979. His great-grandfather, the late Shaligram Singh, practised at the Calcutta High Court from 1877 to 1905 and, along with his brother, established Bihar National College in 1885, popularly known as B.N. College. He was also twice elected as an MLC to the Bengal Legislative Council, serving during 1899–1901 and 1901–1903.

Justice Singh completed his initial schooling at St. Xavier's, Patna, and his ICSE from St. Michael's, Patna, in 1971. He pursued Economics Honours at Patna College and studied Law at Patna Law College.

He was enrolled as an Advocate on 9 July 1980 and practised in several branches of law, including constitutional, civil, criminal, and income tax law. He served as Government Pleader in 1998–99 and also worked as University Counsel. He was designated as a Senior Advocate in 2004.

Justice Singh was elevated as a Judge of the Patna High Court on 9 October 2006 and superannuated on 31 July 2017 as the senior-most Judge. During his tenure on the Bench, he served as Executive Chairman of the Bihar Judicial Academy and the Bihar State Legal Services Authority.

He was also appointed Chairperson of the State Level Committee for Bihar by the National Green Tribunal to monitor the implementation of provisions concerning pollution. In March 2019, he was appointed President of the State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission, Bihar, Patna.

Justice Singh has been associated with social service organisations for several decades. He has been a member of the Lions Club since 1982 and has served as President of the St. Xavier's Alumni Association, Patna Golf Club, and Patna Law College Alumni Association.

He is married to Manju Singh and has two sons and grandchildren. His elder son, Gaurav Singh, is an Executive Director at PwC, while his younger son, Harsh Singh, is a practising advocate at the Patna High Court. Justice Singh has interests in reading, writing, music, travelling, and sports.
